Beach Bound

Coconut Records Playlist at MixPod.com

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a music buff.  So please forgive me if this is nothing new to you, but it blew my mind.  I was listening to Pandora a couple nights ago when I heard the song "West Coast" by Coconut Records.  It was sweet and a little melancholic and made me think of the end of summer.  I wanted more, so I did a preliminary search for Coconut Records and found out that it's just Jason Schwartzman doing all the instrumentals and vocals in a recording studio.  Yes, Jason Schwartzman of Darjeeling Limited, I Heart Huckabees and Phantom Planet.  I think he'll probably be the drummer for Phantom Planet in my mind, even though he left the band in 2003 and the band has been "on hiatus" (not broken up) since December 2008.

I'd never really thought about the fact that recording studios allow for a whole new meaning to the one man band.  Pretty cool, huh?

Anyway, I gave Coconut Records' two albums a listen and the whole collection is very sunny and makes me think of sunset walks on the beach (in a fun, hip way; not a classified ad way) when the weather is starting to cool.  Turns out the song "West Coast" was used on The OC.  Fitting?  Yes. There are a couple of other songs, like "Summer Day" and "It's Not You, It's Me" that I know I recognize, but I'm not sure from where.  If you know, please tell me!

So this auditory escapade has put me in a very beachy mood.  You're probably thinking "Mini, you're always in a beachy mood."  I suppose you're right.  It's something I love about Oregon--you're never too far from the beach.  I don't think I could ever live somewhere too far from an ocean.  I love the feeling of sand between my toes and the enormity (here's an interesting tidbit on the meaning of that word) of  a body of water whose end you can't see.  It makes me think while putting me strangely at ease.

So I think I may take a day trip to the beach tomorrow or the next day.  Why not?

Ideally, I'd wear these shorts and Ray-Bans.  I may settle for a sundress and flip-flops, but things are never bad on the beach.
