The Board 1.31.09

Ladies, we are fast approaching prom season.  While that may not hold the same magic for me now as it did 5 or 6 years ago, I still love prom issues of magazines.  The frothy dresses and the search for a date and the promise of magic that prom night holds--it's fun to reflect on.  I had a lot of fun on prom, though I about lost my mind when "Live Your Life" by Rihanna and T.I. came out--it samples "Dragostea din te" by O-Zone and that was pretty much the only song my friends and I listened to on prom night!

I think this Thread Social dress is the perfect way to show my current prom spirit.  I wouldn't look crazy, like I would if I just straight wore a prom dress, but I'd still get to wear a corsage!

Slice of life Sunday

Currently, I'm:

  • Living For: Graduation, motherfuckers!  I'm so tired of the details and the homework and the day-to-day.  Plus, I'm ready to start working more than 10 hours a week.
  • Loving: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.  It's just so funny!  Maybe it's because I relate to the characters a little too well, but I think it's hilarious.
  • Lusting After: This Rick Owens jacket.  Not only has it been sitting in my inspiration folder for ages, taunting me, but it's also getting really cold out again.  A new jacket would be great for combating that.
  • Listening To: A whole bunch of stuff.  I have "Australia" by The Shins stuck in my head right now, but when I woke up, it was "Right Now (Na Na Na Na)" by Akon.  This week, "The Fitted Shirt" by Spoon took "A Certain Romance" down a notch on my most played list somehow.  And "Guns and Cigarettes" by Atmosphere and "Campus" by Vampire Weekend?  I just like them.  Thought they'd round out this weird playlist.

The Board 1.24.09

I wish I had some kind of fabulous cocktail party to go to every weekend.  I love a good chance to get dressed up.  Unfortunately, my social life of sorority functions and bar hopping doesn't call for silk dresses and filigree cuffs.  If only it did...

New Years' Resolutions?

I always hesitate to make resolutions.  They're never fulfilled and they always seem to deal in verbatims.  "I must do this, I can't do that" I have a hard time putting any kind of restrictions on myself.  However, this year I've put some thought into the coming of a new year and my transformation from awkward teenager into happy adult over the last few years and have made two resolutions.  These aren't for the year and certainly aren't the only resolution that I'll want to have this year, but they're good things for me to keep in mind as I start this new year.

First, I want to work on smiling more.  My face is very animated, but somehow my "resting" facial expression is a frown.  I'm not a sad person.  I want my natural disposition when I'm walking about to reflect that I'm happy.

Second, I want to wear heels more.  Currently, my goal is to wear them all day one day a week.  I have an enormous number of heels for the amount that I wear them.  What's the point in having shoes you only wear once or twice a year?  My habit prior to January was pretty much just to wear heels when I was going to get good and drunk.  I have a secret to tell you, though:  that is a DUMB plan.  The reasoning behind it is sound:  when I'm drunk I can't feel the pain as much.  But, if you're wearing heels you totter in when you're sober, the drunk imbalance will just make you fall over more.  Besides, as sexy as heels are at the bar, it shows way more confidence to wear them on campus.  And all that walking will prep you for your next bar crawl!

That's it.  Two goals.  One year.  I'm pretty confident in these.

Fendi RTW Spring 09

Ah, Fendi, the brand I didn't know I loved.  This collection isn't anything mind-blowing, though the knee-length hemlines are a refreshing look.  I can't tell you how many times I've looked at runway shows and thought "I would totally wear that if it wasn't going to show my lady parts..."  I will admit, that by the time the show was through, I was hating on the belts so hard I almost didn't feature Fendi on here.  But then I looked over the images again and saw that what's underneath the belts is beautiful and feminine, something I think we really need to embrace in this hard economic climate.  I always feel better when I'm dressed in a way that shows off, rather than combats, my feminine features.  Plus spring is the perfect time to bust out the laser-cut lace, white fluttery fabrics and sheer underpinnings.  The season almost begs for it.

1.20.09

I know this is crazy similar to the outfit posted yesterday.  However, you can rest assured that I wore this a week after the last one.  Something not reflected in this photo is that when my hair's completely down and I'm wearing this turtle neck, I look like I'm nearing a midlife crisis.  Actually, this haircut just has that effect 75% of the time.  Ah well.  Hair grows.

On a side note, I paid about $5 for these shoes.  Yowza!

1.13.09...again?

I have a very hard time with titling my posts.  When I wrote essays for school (thank goodness I don't do much of that anymore), I had the same problem.  So when I made a post on 1/13, I titled it after the date.  This is the outfit I wore on 1/13 and I want to title it after the date I wore it.  What to do, what to do...

Sweater, Old Navy; skirt, Torrid; sunnies, Torrid; necklace, Forever 21; belt, Old Navy; Shoes, Gap

Whenever I wear this sweater, I feel a bit like Velma from Scooby Doo..  Looking at the pictures, I realized that I'm crazy and the sweater is actually quite retro and cute, but man, I can't shake that "Jenkies!" feeling when it's on.

Slice of life Sunday

Currently, I'm:

  • Living For: Shoo-Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy night!  Heidi and I have been saying we were going to do this since summer.  Today, we're finally making it happen!
  • Loving: Fresh fruit.  I've been to the grocery store an unreasonable amount recently and the result is that our fruit bowl is full, there's a bag of oranges in the "pantry" and there are 4 boxes of berries in the fridge!
  • Lusting After: A Stella McCartney Boy Fit Blazer.  I've been feeling like a huge schlub recently and I feel like this would be comfy enough to not make me feel uncomfortable but put together enough that no one else will be able to tell I don't feel well.
  • Listening Too: My top 25 in iTunes.  This week, "A Certain Romance" by the Arctic Monkeys knocked "Question" by the Old 97s down a spot.  Here are the top 5:

The Board 1.17.09

The moment I saw this skirt, I fell in love.  I'm notorious among my friends for liking bright things and sparkly things and just generally wierd things...this skirt probably wouldn't surprise any of them.  Nor would the fabulous pink booties--my roommate recently made fun of me for the number of shoes I own that are just ridiculous--they wouldn't look at all out of place next to my black boots with blue gems or my witch boots (though I got rid of the witch boots a while back).  I chose to pair the skirt with a t-shirt because I thought it called for something simple.  A more frilly or formal shirt would make the skirt look like it's trying to hard.  And the clutch...I don't know, just seemed to fit the tone of the outfit.  Definitely more of a party outfit than an every day one.

Goat Cheese Cake with Mixed Berries

Oh my god.  On Tuesday, I had an itch to bake something decadent (a loaf of bread or some cokies just weren't going to do it), so I turned to one of my most recent cookbook purchases:  Classic Stars Desserts by Emily Luchetti.  It was nothing short of amazing.  I know that the sound of goat cheese may turn some people off, but just...do it!  Make the cake, thank me (and Emily!) later.  It is just so good!

Goat Cheese Cake With Mixed Berries

  • Butter and granulated sugar for the cake pan
  • 11 ounces fresh goat cheese, at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 6 large eggs, separated
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 pint blackberries (about 1 cup)
  • 1 pint raspberries (about 2 cups)

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9-inch round cake pan and dust with granulated sugar, tapping out the excess.
  2. Put the goat cheese, sugar, vanilla, lemon zest, and lemon juice in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and beat until smooth. Stir in the egg yolks two at a time, mixing well after each addition. Mix in the flour until incorporated.
  3. Put the egg whites in another mixer bowl, fit the mixer with the whip attachment, and whip on medium speed until soft peaks form. Using a spatula, gently fold the egg whites into the goat cheese mixture. Spread the batter into the prepared pan.
  4. Bake until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool to room temperature.
  5. To serve, run a knife around the inside edge of the pan to loosen the cake, invert a platter on top of the pan, and then invert the plate and pan together. Lift off the pan. Top with the berries and serve.

My roommate and I agree that it would be completely appropriate to drizzle some chocolate sauce onthe cake or serve it with a dollop of pastry cream (or even just a scoop of vanilla ice cream).  The cake is simple enough that the flavors wouldn't compete, but bold enough to taste great on its own.
