Slice of life Sunday 5/31

This is the magic of the internet:  I'm writing this post on Thursday.  The weekend has yet to transpire!  But why am I doing this on Thursday?  Well, because I simply won't have time to on Sunday.  It's my last day in the duplex and I'd venture to say it's going to be a busy one.  So here's my slice of life, a little early.  Currently, I'm:

  • Living For: The end of the term.  Check it:  this time next week, I'll be living in PORTLAND (with my parents...) and NOT going to school (for a month and a half...) but still!  It's so near!
  • Loving: The sunshine!  Oregon sun is probably the prettiest sun.  It's crisp and clear and not too bright.  And it gives me an excuse to wear sunglasss.
  • Lusting After: Lacy, sheer tops.  The peek-a-boo factor on them is so sensual.  I love it!
  • Listening To: An eclectic mix, that's for sure.  Dispatch, Modest Mouse, Ben Folds Five, Flight of the Conchords and Ed Harcourt?  Alright...

Inspiration Friday 5/29

Alright chickadees, as you go out into the world for a fabulous weekend (mine is going to include floating the river and working on my tan), I'd like you to keep a few things in mind.  For me.  Can you do that?  Inspired by Full Figure Plus' article "Top Ten Fashion Don'ts for Plus Size Curvy Fashionistas", I have a list:  5 dos and don't in fashion (and life!)

  1. DO accentuate your positive features.  Got a tiny waist?  Belt it up!  Don't worry about over-accentuating your hips--I promise this look only flatters!  Do you have fabulous cleavage (I'd go so far as to say most women do!)?  Get out that v-neck t-shirt!  For you girls with great gams--be bold and wear that miniskirt today!  And if you can't think of anything you like about yourself--take a nice hot shower.  Use an exfoliating scrub and think about exfoliating away all those negative thoughts.  Then do your hair up your favorite way and put do your makeup.  I always feel better when I walk out the door knowing that I have a pretty face!
  2. DON'T beat yourself over flaws.  Let me tell you--I have a stomach I've been embarassed about my whole life.  But you know what?  It's ok.  You know why?  Because I'm a good person anyway.  There are other great qualities about me.  And no one is absolutely perfect.
  3. DO dress appropriately for the situataion.  That sequined dress may be great for going clubbing, but it's probably not the best choice for picking up your nephews at school.  When you're dressed correctly for the situation, you're less likely to worry about your clothes and your personality will be able to shine through!
  4. DON'T be lazy!  So many women say they don't have time for fashion.  It's not true!!  It takes just as much time to dress well in the morning as it does to dress poorly!  Putting a blazer on over your jeans dresses them up instantly and takes no time at all!  A sundress takes LESS time to put on than sweats!  Let's be serious here, you have the time to dress well, so DO!
  5. DO get a bra that fits and supports.  This is taken straight from Full Figure Plus.  It is critical that your breasts sit where they're supposed to at all times!  Saggy boobs are sad boobs.  And when your girls are in the right place, shirts and dresses fit better (you know, the way they're supposed to!).  Never be afraid to be proud of your cleavage!

Remember that the most important part of selling anyone on anything is CONFIDENCE.  Be confident in yourself, be confident in your clothing choices and be confident that I love you!  Happy weekend y'all!

Bloglovin'

Follow my blog with bloglovin´

Here's a breif tidbit:  for blog reading, I use Bloglovin'.  Some people use Google reader and that's cool too, I've never personally checked it out.  What I like about Bloglovin' is that it assembles your blogs kind of like a magazine.  You click on the story you want to read it takes you to the page.  From there, there's a button in the bottom right corner that allows you to "turn the page" so to speak and move on to the next story.  Kind of neat, huh?

Here's the spiel from the site:

The sun was out in full sparkling glory on Saturday.  And there's nothing like vitamin D to make a girl want to don a sundress and smell the flowers!

Cindy Sherman lives!

So, in high school, when I was super into photography, my favorite photographer was Cindy Sherman, simply for her series "Untitled Film Stills."  For my senior project in photo--something that was kind of like a thesis, but in photographic form, I took on the film stills.  Some of the work I did was straight reproduction, some of it was interpretation of the theme.  The film stills are, in the grandest sense, about the hardship of being a woman.  In a less philosophical vein, what Sherman did was take "self portraits" (how much of it is actually self-portraiture is actually pretty minimal) in character.  She played women from B-movies who were going about, doing their normal thing, but there's something subversive going on in the undertones.  The women are upset or distracted, struggling with something.

So, yes, I have a deep and undying love for the Untitled Film Stills.  So imagine my joy/surprise when I came across this feature in Cheapskate Chic on the model Valentine in photos very much in the vein of Cindy Sherman.  Coincidence?  I think not.  While it doesn't seem that Miss Woo knows it (and let's face it, not everyone can be as cool and artsy as me!), the photographer was definitely shooting in the style of Cindy Sherman.

IFB Links à la Mode 5/15

Edited by STYLEMOM

The Fashion life cycle is ever evolving. Trends come and go faster than ever propelled by the information stream of online and social media. With each change comes a new perspective and new creative ideas flourish. Human survival demands that you must adapt and change with your environment in order to survive and this is also true of fashion.. Even old ideas sometimes are reinvented and come full circle creating an impact on the latest trends. This week’s links include everything from DIY and recycled style, to new discoveries and changes in the fashion industry, representing a testament to the constant evolution of fashion.

There’s the full version of Links á la Mode here in the forums… there’s a lot of great posts there too.

Links à la Mode : May 15th

I know I said I wouldn't be running Links à la Mode again after the cap on entries, but I've found that I don't read enough amazing blog posts in a month to fill out a single links-only post.  Plus, I've been missing the IFB community.  It's a crazy world out there and it's nice to know there are people to revel in it with you.

Never thought I'd be on a boat

The sun has come out for a bit of a visit today.  Pair that with my recent viewing of The Lonely Island performing "I'm On A Boat" live on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and I think my desire to dress nautically is no surprise.  Don't you wish you were on the deck of a yacht, sunbathing with a drink in your hand?  Sounds wonderful to me...

And of course, the original masterpiece.

She's BAAAACK

How's that for a closeup?  Ack!  But here I am, I got a new battery for my camera, so it's no longer out of commission=I'm coming back to blogging?  I hope so.  Here's what I wore yesterday.

5/12/2009

Yesterday was pretty relaxed, but it was chilly and I didn't want to wear a jacket, so I layered 2 long-sleeved shirts and called it good.  Notice how the buttons are gaping on my chest?  I know you did, you can't help it.  I unbuttoned that button, oh, pretty much immediately.  It's all good.
